Council on At-Risk Youth (CARY)

(Children)

Non-Profit Details

Founded out of concern about the increase in violence by youth in schools following the Columbine H. S. tragedy, CARY now serves 600 middle school students a year in AISD. CARY's PeaceRox Program provides training to youth who are aggressive and abusive in school (bullying, fighting, possessing weapons on campus or using threatening language at school). The training is provided at school by Youth Advisors during electives twice a week for a year and includes anger management, empathy and social skills. PeaceRox results in higher grades and less truancy and disciplinary problems. Our goal is to give kids the skills to change their behavior so they can stay in school and not end up in the criminal justice system.

Mission Statement

Helping youth promote safe schools and safe communities

Texas Inmate Families Association

(Children, Civil Rights, Community and Service, Economic Empowerment, Housing & Homelessness, Poverty Alleviation, Women's issues)

Non-Profit Details

TIFA (Texas Inmate Families Association) was founded in 1996 and currently consists of 11 chapters around the state. About 200,000 adult men and women are incarcerated at any one time in correctional facilities in Texas. The state has the unenviable distinction of having more adults behind bars than any other state in the US: 55% leave behind a spouse, 85% or more leave behind a parent and/or child and about 75% of male inmates and more than 95% of female inmates have a child younger than 18. This ‘invisible’ population not only faces the trauma of loss, but also a range of economic and social challenges that result from the incarceration. The shame and stigma of incarceration can often make it difficult to access services and to find the support these families need. TIFA offers a safe place for families and friends to share their concerns, questions and experiences, seek advice and overcome their feelings of isolation and despair, in a nurturing, nonjudgmental, hopeful atmosphere.

Mission Statement

Breaking the cycle of crime by strengthening families through support, education, and advocacy.
